a girl less travelled…

As someone that considers herself relatively well travelled (don’t make me repeat my tagline about living and working on six continents), I find it difficult to get my head around my lack of jet setting in the past year. My previous work assignments have allowed me free reign to travel here and there, visit home almost whenever I wanted, and certainly the financial freedom to do so.

My life is very different now… The choices I have made have brought me to this point in time, where I am glad that I saved some money, and I am glad that I travelled so extensively, because for the foreseeable future, this is my home and I won’t be stepping outside of the US very often. Part of that is because I can’t afford to, part of it is because I choose to spend my money on other things, part of it is because I choose to live with Handsome, part of it is just simply because all of my priorities are different now. And maybe the biggest part of all is that I am no longer running away from whatever I was running away from before. I am happy to be by Handsome’s side and savor all the delights that brings.

But I confess I do miss the excitement of travelling to a new place, planning a new excursion, researching restaurants, tourist spots, the best hotels, the coolest spots… In the past year we did manage to make it to San Francisco for a short weekend, but other than that (and some business trips to Texas baby) I have been confined mostly to Northern Virginia, with short trips within Virginia being my most adventurous…

Well no more! Tomorrow I get to spread my wings and reach out for the happy delights and heady sights of…

NEW YORK CITY!

I’ve been there before, once with my folks  when I was eight and once with an ex-boyfriend, but there’s something about going with Handsome, the love of my life, that fills me with such joy and excitement, I could burst! Every new sight will be like it was never seen before, every old tourist spot like new… I’ve been up the Empire State Building twice already. Is that gonna stop me going up again? No way! Although my friend did tell me I should go up the Rockefeller Center tower instead, but whatever! We both love to walk around and look at what’s going on, we both love sitting outside of little cafés having a beer. I absolutely, positively, can’t wait.

And the day is finally here… We leave tomorrow afternoon. I finally get a bit of fun and excitement, and believe you me, I deserve it. Handsome deserves it. Even the dog is getting a little vaca this weekend. He’s going to stay with his girlfriend. And we won’t talk about the fact that his girlfriend will get the opposite of a vaca, as my boy chases her round and round… oh dear…

So while the dog’s away, we will play… in New York no less. I really haven’t prepared for this trip. I’ve had no time. But how much can you do in 45 hours anyway? We will wander around, we will look for cool little weekend markets, we will find excellent places to have breakfast, lunch and dinner and plenty of beers and wine inbetween. We might get a little bit sauced, we may take a nap (in the city that never sleeps? Really?). But most important of all, I will have an amazing time and I will come back full of stories to share with you all…

Stay tuned…

  1. Having just got off a plane from the UK to Australia, air-travel is feeling a lot less glamorous right now..
Enjoy NYC my favourite foody things were artisan Ice pops (www.peoplespops.com/‎) on the high line (www.thehighline.org/) and the green apple and cheddar flavoured soft serve ice cream at Momufuku milk bar http://milkbarstore.com/ (better than their garbage cookies and cheaper than eating at the restaurant.
I am guessing you know http://www.amateurgourmet.com/ who used to live and blog from NYC before moving the LA and might still be useful.
